Jarnal - Toolbars and Collaboration Lockdown

Thanks to Arno Pasternak for working this through with me. He reports success with method 2 of editing toolbars, but had trouble with method 1.

How to get rid of the Collaborate Menu (lock it down for student use, for example, on exams)

The collaboration system uses a special toolbar button (the "hand", known internally as "Request Control") to take and release control of a document. Ordinarily that button is invisible and appears only when you start collaborating. If no toolbar contains this toolbar button the collaborate menu will not be loaded. Hence to get rid of the collaborate menu you should get rid of all "Request Control" buttons on the toolbars. Here is how to do that:

1. Edit the toolbars (see below) and comment out the "Request Control" button in all three toolbars (by default Toolbar1 and Toolbar 3)
2. Create a new template from your document (see below)
3. When you open jarnal using the new template the "Collaborate" menu item will not appear

How to Edit the Toolbars (method 1)

1. On the "File" Menu under "Options" choose "Edit Internal Files"
2. In the dialog dropdown menu scroll to the top and choose "Conf"
3. Click on "Conf" in the large box
4. Click "Save"
5. save the file someplace where you can find it
6. using a text editor open the Conf file you saved
7. towards the bottom of the file you will find sections labeled "Toolbar1", "Toolbar2" and "Toolbar3" these correspond to the top, bottom and presentation (full screen) toolbars respectively
8. each toolbar has a list of buttons - if the line begins with "#" then the tool is commented out
9. comment or uncomment tools to remove tools or activate tools respectively
10. save the file
11. On the dialog from which you saved the "Conf" file choose "Open" and open the modified "Conf" file
12. "Exit this dialog"
13. If you want to see the modified toolbar immediately under "File|Options|Toolbars" choose the toolbar you want to see and select the Conf file you edited (note: some changes in toolbars change the menus as well - this will be visible only if the file is saved and reopened or used as a template - see below)

How to Edit the Toolbars (method 2)

1. find the .jaj file with the template you want to modify
2. this is a zip file, you can open it with any program that can open .zip files
3. inside the zip file in the main directory you will find a file called jarnal.conf
4. extract this file and edit it using a text editor (see above)
5. replace the jarnal.conf file in the .jaj file with the edited version

How to Create a Template

1. Save the current file ("File|Save") (for example - save it as "myoptions.jaj")
2. the saved .jaj will have all options for the current document
 3. if you use the saved .jaj file as a template all the options you saved will be active (for example - you open jarnal with the command line switch "-t path_to_template_file")
